Training
Hi Guys, just was reading a interview in Yachting Monthly with Philippe Péché, who was participating in the Golden Globe Race 2018/19 and was because of a damaged tiller forced to retire and sail to Cape Town. However, there is always a part called “Lessons learned” - let me show you what he was saying : “Training, training : I should have done a lot more training both with the self-steering system and with the boat. Anyone doing something like this needs time on the water in harsh conditions. Bend your equipment, damage it, and repair it, so you know exactly where the weak points are. Really, I think you need two years with your boat to prepare for this event.” I totally agree with him, if I remember what I damaged during my training trips….my lord…..It’s really all about learning where the limits of your boat are, you need to know how long the autopilot is able to steer the boat, how to cope with waves, when things are breaking, how to reef in 50 knots of wind, how the boat is behaving with big waves from behind and so on. All this is building know how and trust. And that makes it safe. You need to know the weak points, and be sure, you will never know the weak points if you not sail in harsh conditions, or if you think about that in the harbor. Awesome interview, thank you !
