Chains

There are blockchains, people chains, peace chains, supply chains, snow chains, anchor chains and spare chains. Dealing with a sailing boat is to keep up a never-ending spare chain running. I don’t know in how many countries I’ve already ordered spare parts…..I never visiting Lifgun without spare parts. I never leave her without a “to do” or a “to order” list. The upside is, that after a couple of years you literally know every single screw of your boat. But still, sometimes I’m totally surprised. Last weekend all the downlights were not working or better were not switching on. Rather fast, I figured out that it must be a problem with the Empirbus system. Maybe best to do a total restart of all the stuff, beside the fact that I had to go through the whole start up routine for the water maker after a total electrical shut down, nothing changed. The downlights still not worked. After a mail to a.) the supplier of the system in Sweden and b.) to the electrician which was installing the whole system in Denmark and a bcc to Luffe Shipyard and the YachtWorks in Turkey – Martin the danish electrician was writing me, that almost all the downlights are connected to a Empirbus unit located in the ceiling of the starboard aft cabin….omg – I had no idea that there was something in the ceiling. To make a long story short – the unit was totally dead and will be replaced with a new one from Sweden. Then we went sailing. The kicker was not holding the boom up anymore….sheez….again the gas spring, which is probably rusted away….I had the same problem when I left Spain 2.5 years ago. I wrote an email to the manufacturer and was asking why this gas springs are always rusting  away in less then 3 years…the answer was : “The gas spring you need is also produced in stainless steel (V2) and that is what we normally recommend for used off-shore. But the producers of the sailboat always have chosen the cheapest model and therefore you have the gasspring with less durability.” Lesson learned. At least it was an awesome sailing day. Cheers to all !
